Monday January 30, 2012: Beer from that City Up North at The Petrol Station
Posted by john | Beer, Meetings | Posted on January 30th, 2012
The Petrol Station has some friends visiting from the Big “D” and is celebrating by tapping a keg of IPA from one of the newest craft breweries in Texas. We promise this won’t be one of those “oh, I want my two friends who don’t have anything in common except me to meet and be friends” kind of awkward platonic set ups where everybody is uncomfortable and just wants to leave. Come out to sample the new beer, or to take advantage of their ‘pint and a burger‘ Monday night special, or maybe some rosemary feta french fries and a pint. Or just a pint. See you at 985 Wakefield, in Garden Oaks, at 8 PM.
Beer in Greco-Roman antiquity
Posted by mike | Beer | Posted on January 25th, 2012
This thesis is an attempt to collect all the evidence for beer found in ancient Greek and Latin authors, from 700 B.C. to A.D. 900, and to provide analysis of and commentary on this material. The thesis is divided into three parts, one on the philology of beer, dealing with the various words and expressions for the beverage in Greek and Latin, one on the technology of beer, dealing with the methods of beer production in antiquity and the characteristics of the final product, and finally, one on the ideology of beer, dealing with Greek and Roman views concerning the drink and their subsequent influence on others.
Monday, 23 January 2011: Cool beer for a warm January at The Ginger Man

The Ginger Man (5607 Morningside) is a great place for a pint, especially in nice weather. See you there at 8 PM.
Monday, 16 January 2012: The drinks that dreams are made of at Anvil
Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on January 16th, 2012
Anvil Bar and Refuge, 1424 Westheimer, is the best bet on lower Westheimer for a good beer. (Yeah, sure, Hay Merchant is opening Real Soon Now. And there really is a Santa Claus.) See you there at 8 PM. As always, take note of the local parking reality, and stop by for a draught or a cocktail.

It’s a shame we won’t be getting a Freetail brewpub in Houston. These guys seem like a lot of fun.
Monday, 9 January 2012: No Naval Gazing at Liberty Station
Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on January 9th, 2012
So, just in case you were confused, we’re in Houston, not Sandy Eggo. So, when we say “meet at Liberty Station at 8 PM tonight,” we’re not recommending that you hop a plane and meet us here. We won’t be there. Join us at Liberty Station, 2101 Washington Ave, at 8 PM tonight. Their tap list has great variety for its size, and if you’re hungry, there’s probably a food truck outside (you are free to brown bag it as well).
Moon Tower on the Horizon: A(nother) New Brewpub
Posted by mike | Beer | Posted on January 4th, 2012
We still think it was nuts to close Moon Tower Inn just when the Houston weather was most conducive to outdoor dining. We could have given them plenty of ideas on how to keep serving up the sausage during the build out. However, we were pretty excited when we heard about their plans to open a brewery as a part of the new, improved, MTI; even more so when we heard who will be manning the mash tuns. Lushtastic has the details. Now if they would just be open Monday nights!
2 January 2012: Start the year off right at El Gran Malo
Posted by john | Meetings | Posted on January 2nd, 2012
Whether or not you might have (ahem) over-indulged this weekend, come out for a little pelos del perro tonight at El Gran Malo, at 2307 Ella Blvd. If you want to sample EGM’s great tacos, or you want to catch happy hour before it’s over, come by at 7 PM; if you’re just interested in the infused tequilas and good (albeit short) beer list, and don’t care about the cost, stop by at 8 PM. Either way, enjoy yourself responsibly, as Señor Luchador is watching.
