the hay merchant craft food and beer houston txThe long-awaited, much-anticipated new kid on the block has arrived, and tonight is as good a night as any to check out Kevin Floyd’s new bar.  With 77 individually-regulated taps (including at least one nitro and 5 casks) and coolers segregated between ales and lagers, The Hay Merchant, at 1100 Westheimer, may be on to something.  Stop by at 8:00 PM tonight to find out.

Monday, 20 February 2012: El día de los presidentes at Ninfa’s on Navigation

Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on February 20th, 2012

For Presidents Day, we’re pulling out all the stops and heading someplace a bit outside our normal parameters.  Ninfa’s on Navigation at 2704 Navigation (aka “The Original Ninfa’s“, or “Mama Ninfa’s”, or “The One That Doesn’t Suck”) recently got some help on their drink program from the fine folks at Anvil.  So if your beer palate doesn’t allow for the occasional Vienna lager, there should be good mixed drinks at the ready.  Of course, you really go to Ninfa’s for the signature fajitas, which due to the peculiarities of international tariffs, are some of the very few still made with outside skirt.  We’ll see you there on the patio a bit early (7:30 PM), but we’ll be around for a while.  ¡Viva EEUU!

Monday, 13 February 2012: Beer Our Valentine at Liberty Station

XOXO, Diasporites! Whether your situation or taste in beers runs more to the bitter or the sweet (or even the sour or the downright funky), join us at Liberty Station2101 Washington Ave, at 8 PM tonight.  Their tap list has great variety for its size, and if you’re hungry, there’s probably a food truck outside (you are free to brown bag it as well).

We’ll believe it when we see it, but…

It sure seems impressive.  Don’t expect a visit from the Diasporites on a Monday night in the first month or so of open, but it will definitely get a chance to charm itself into the rotation:

The Hay Merchant is opening within the next two weeks, if not sooner, and on Super Bowl Sunday at 2 p.m., new hires sat around the tall bar tables for their first day of training. Kevin Floyd, co-owner and the project’s creator, stood comfortably behind the bar, which takes up the entire back wall of the room, and began the process of entrancing the captive audience with his knowledge of craft beer. The staff at The Hay Merchant will undoubtedly be some of the most educated beer nerds in the city.

Monday, 6 February 2012: Post Bowl Drinks at Down House

Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on February 6th, 2012

Hopefully your team won, or you just don’t care about that game that happened yesterday.  Either way, Monday nights will be free of American football for at least a few weeks, so come out to celebrate, commiserate, or just liquidate at Down House, 1801 Yale St., at 8  PM.

Side note:  How Ace Ventura may end up being responsible for an end to the NFL’s love-hate relationship with Roman numerals.
