Although the proprietors say that the mongoose always wins, find out for yourself as we stage a rematch visit to MvsC at 1011 McGowan.  Try a cocktail or a beer to wash down the excellent pub food on their menu. And be sure to wash your hands if you visit the restroom.  See you there at 8 PM.  Park in the Greensheets lot (the one on the northeast corner of Main & McGowan).

The folks at My Table turn in a nice review of our new favorite pub:

Mongoose Versus Cobra is a violent sort of name for a bar, but the reasoning behind it is rather zen. “It has a lot of meanings,” said co-owner Mike Sammons. “Perhaps the mongoose is beer, while the cobra represents spirits. I think it also stands for the little guy standing up to the big guy and winning, because the mongoose always wins.”

Join us tonight at Down House, 1801 Yale St., at 8:00 PM for a cocktail or beer, and grab some good grub if you’re peckish.  DH is in the dry part of the Heights, so make sure you bring your I.D. so you can join their club for the night.  Also, they have more parking on 18th half a block west of Yale, if the main parking lot is full.

Monday, 4 June 2012: Beer geeks win at Mongoose vs Cobra

It’s really a great time to be a craft beer lover in Houston.  Lots of great long-time favorites are going strong, while new pubs that “get it” seem to open every week.  Well, that’s exaggerating a bit, but last week marked the opening of Mongoose versus Cobra, the new gastropub from the fine folks at 13 Celsius, at 1011 McGowan.

Our advance team made first contact on Saturday, and can attest that this place belongs on the short list for any beer geek|nerd|snob.  The tap list is up there with the best in Houston, and they can also make a mean mixed drink.  Not to mention the food menu.  Ok, we will mention it:  great interpretations of pub classic nibble, bites, and meals round out the experience nicely.   Finally, a reason to be in Midtown that doesn’t involve an Ed Hardy shirt!

So, meet us there at 8:00 PM.  Park in the big lot at McGowan and Main.  We’ve got the Mezzanine reserved, so head to the back and climb the stairs.  If it’s been a while since you’ve been out with us on a Monday night, this would be a great time to get reacquainted.
