On this day in 1939, the first Major League Baseball game was televised on W2XBS (which, rather than being an 1990’s hip hop act, was the old name for WNBC).  The Reds and the (Brooklyn) Dodgers split a doubleheader at Ebbets Field.  Celebrate televised baseball with a pint at The Hay Merchant1100 Westheimer, at 8:00 PM.  Tonight the Reds will be playing the Cards on TV, so the last half of the game will probably still be on. Sample something from the 77 individually-regulated taps (including at least one nitro and 5 casks) or from the food menu.

Happy Birthday to Brandford Marsalis, who turns 53 today.

Liberty StationOn this day in 1812, the USS Constitution earned its moniker “Old Ironsides.”  Celebrate the glory days of American shipbuilding at Liberty Station2101 Washington Ave, at 8 PM tonight.  The tap list has great variety for its size, they have a bar full of certifiably-inspired mixed drinks, and if you’re hungry, there’s probably a food truck outside (you are free to brown bag it as well).

Monday 12 August, 2013: Drinks, food united at Down House

Down House SignJoin us tonight at Down House, 1801 Yale St., at 8:00 PM for a cocktail or beer, and grab some good grub if you’re peckish.  DH is in the dry part of the Heights, so make sure you bring your I.D. so you can join their club for the night (or your existing club membership card if you’ve been there recently).  Also, they have more parking on 18th half a block west of Yale, if the main parking lot is full.

This list may or may not reflect the actual list of beers you could select from.

On this date in 1961, East Germany began construction of a wall in Berlin, leading to this historic speech by Ronald Reagan in 1987.

Monday, 5 August, 2013: Obiwankenobiphobia at Cottonwood

Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on August 5th, 2013

2012-12-05 19.50.48On this day in 2000, Sir Alec Guinness became one with the Force.  Although its resemblance to Chalum’s Cantina at Mos Eisley is tenuous at best, Cottonwood Bar, 3422 N Shepherd Dr , seems like a good place to commerate.  White suits are not recommended, given the weather.  See you there, with Control’s blessing, at 8 PM.

Apologies to Dr. Jack Badofsky.
