Posted by john | Meetings | Posted on October 28th, 2013

Local PourJoin us tonight at Local Pour, 1952 W Gray St , at 8 PM. Where we can discuss the following or any other topic that comes to mind.

Today was a good day in US history for monuments such as this stainless steel beauty in St. Louis.

On this day in 1965, construction is completed on the Gateway Arch, a spectacular 630-foot-high parabola of stainless steel marking the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial on the waterfront of St. Louis, Missouri.

Or in 1886 – In New York Harbor, U.S. President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty (pictured), a gift from France, to commemorate the centennial of the Declaration of Independence.

Monday, 21 October 2013: Bebop over to Down House

Posted by john | Meetings | Posted on October 21st, 2013

Down House SignOn this day in 1917, John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie was born in Cheraw, South Carolina.  Gillespie would go on to help create the jazz form bebop and make some waves in the Bayou City along the way.  There’s no record of where (besides the Music Hall and the police station) Dizz visited while he was here, but we bet if it were there at the time, he’d have enjoyed a visit to Down House1801 Yale St. Join us there at 8:00 PM for a cocktail or beer, and grab some good grub if you’re peckish.  DH is in the dry part of the Heights, so make sure you bring your I.D. so you can join their club for the night (or your existing club membership card if you’ve been there recently).  Also, they have more parking on 18th half a block west of Yale, if the main parking lot is full.

This list may or may not reflect the actual list of beers you could select from.

Liberty StationOn this day in 1947, Chuck Yeager was the first person to travel faster than the speed of sound, in a Bell X1 known as “Glamorous Glennis.”  Celebrate breaking barriers at Liberty Station2101 Washington Ave, at 8 PM tonight.  The tap list has great variety for its size, they have a bar full of certifiably-inspired mixed drinks, and if you’re hungry, there’s probably a food truck outside (you are free to brown bag it as well).

Monday, 7 October, 2013: Autumnal Drinks at The Boneyard

Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on October 7th, 2013

Boneyard-Crest-2010_reasonably_smallWhile it’s been fall for two weeks according to the calendar, the hygrometer and thermometer have finally caught up.  Celebrate cooler weather tonight at the Boneyard Drinkery, 8150 Washington Ave. Stop by at 8 PM and bring Rover, as you don’t get any more dog-friendly a drinking establishment in Houston (but check the park rules).  You might even need a jacket.
