Monday, 12 May 2014: American Craft Beers at The Hay Merchant

the hay merchant craft food and beer houston txKick off American Craft Beer Week 2014 with us at The Hay Merchant, 1100 Westheimer, at 8 PM.  Their beer list should give you plenty of options, including for tonight only a Tap Takeover with Karbach Brewing, who will have some interesting, limited-release beers on hand.  That event will have been going on for some time when we show up, so YMMV.

Monday, 5 May 2014: May the Fifth be with you at Whole Foods (Montrose)

wholefoodswaughNo, we’re not suggesting that you bootleg something harder than the excellent beer and wine selections available at Whole Foods, 701 Waugh Dr.  You may want to pick up some munchies before you head over to the Bayou Bar, but leave the hip flasks at home.  See you there at 8 PM.

On this day in 1862, Mexican forces under the command of Texas-born general Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín defeated a much larger and better-supplied French army at Puebla de Los Angeles (later Puebla de Zeragoza, now more informally just “Puebla”).  The victory was non-strategic, but it did boost Mexican morale during the Maximilian Affair.  Which just goes to show that we don’t have good names for conflicts anymore (cf. The Pastry War).
