Liberty StationOn this day in 1804, 25-year-old USN Lt Stephen Decatur led a 80-man volunteer cadre (largely made up of US Marines) to burn the frigate USS Philadelphia, which had fallen into the hands of Barbary Pirates at Tripoli.

Commemorate this brave raid with us tonight at Liberty Station2101 Washington Ave.  The tap list has great variety for its size, they have a bar full of certifiably-inspired mixed drinks, and if you’re hungry, there’s probably a food truck outside (you’re free to brown bag it as well).  See you there at 8 PM.

Monday, 9 February 2015: Kidnap-free Beer at Whole Foods Kirby

Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on February 9th, 2015

On this day in 1960, Adolph Coors III, chairman of the board and grandson of the eponymous founder, was kidnapped on his way to work.  He was held for ransom and later shot to death by former Fulbright Scholar Joe Corbett. Corbett in turn led law enforcement on a protracted international chase before being apprehended.

You will not need to kidnap anyone to grab a beverage with us tonight at Whole1323279_G Foods Kirby, 2955 Kirby Dr, in the Kirbside Bar.  Their beer and wine selections are usually quite good, and you can get some grocery shopping done while you’re at it.  Seating at the bar is somewhat limited, so we may find ourselves out on the patio.  Given the lovely weather, it should be fun; see you there at 8 PM.

Monday, 2 February 2015: Groundhog Day Drinks at Under the Volcano

Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on February 2nd, 2015

VolcanoOn this day in 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.  Largely irrelevant this far south, Groundhog Day is the celebration of the film career of Bill Murray and the underrated vocal stylings of Sonny and Cher.  Join us tonight at Under the Volcano, 2349 Bissonnet Street at Morningside Drive. UtV is a great place for beers, cocktails, and frozen drinks, and has a jukebox with a diverse selection of actual CDs. See you there at 8 PM.  Don’t show up tomorrow, though, as regardless of anybody’s shadow, we won’t be there then.
