Monday, 6 April 2015: The Wrong Element at Under the Volcano

VolcanoFearing that they brought in “the wrong element”, controversial Secretary of the Interior and serial tin-ear James G. Watt on this day in 1983 banned rock bands from that year’s Washington Mall Independence Day festivities. Previous years had seen notorious rabble rousers like The Beach Boys, personal friends of then-President Ronald Reagan, play the Mall. Watt had proposed a “wholesome” program with Wayne Newton and military bands. He was called onto the Oval Office carpet the next day and made to reverse his decision; however, the Beach Boys were unavailable to play the Mall that year as the controversy had given their popularity a boost and were booked to play Atlantic City.  Watt was forced out later that year for another of his many gaffes.

God only knows if you’ll find either the Beach Boys or Wayne Newton, let alone military bands, on the great jukebox at Under the Volcano, 2349 Bissonnet Street at Morningside Drive. But UtV is a great place for beers, cocktails, and frozen drinks, and has a jukebox with a diverse selection of actual CDs. Meet up with us there at 8 PM. Danke schoen.
