Monday, 8 September 2014: No Hurricanes at The Ginger Man

Posted by mike | Meetings | Posted on September 8th, 2014

The Ginger Man Pub HoustonOn this day in 1900, a category 4 hurricane hit Galveston, TX.  More than 6,000 people (and possibly as many as double that) perished.  Although the building of the seawall protected Galveston from such an outscale impact in further storm activity, the city never regained its place of preeminence in southeast Texas, eclipsed as it was by a booming Houston. This growth was due in part to the dredging and expansion of the Houston Ship Channel.

Join us at 8 PM tonight at The Ginger Man, 5607 Morningside, in Rice Village.  There are no hurricanes on the menu or in the forecast for tonight.  Just a pint of good beer and conviviality.

(NB:  If you’re interested in learning more about the 1900 hurricane, we recommend the fictionalized account Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson.)
